Canticles I explores thirty classic settings of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, two canticles from Evensong, each assessed across a set of carefully considered comparative categories. Some values are rooted in historical fact. Others reflect informed musical judgement. A few are deliberately open to debate.
Each card includes a QR code linking directly to a recording of the setting, allowing players to move easily from comparison to listening.
The result is a card game that rewards both knowledge and instinct. It can be played competitively, but it works just as well as a starting point for discussion, particularly about those elusive qualities which give certain works their enduring place in the repertoire.
