advent quiz 2024
After a break since Lent 2021, Advent 2024 sees the revivification of the somewhat niche - and definitely geeky! - AdventQuiz run by Richard Shakeshaft, at its new home at imprimis.uk.
On each Sunday in Advent, an encrypted version of the name of a composer from the imprimis catalogue will be given. Each letter of their name will be represented by a single digit, and the digits will be grouped into fives, so spaces between digits do not indicate separate names; therefore, if there are 14 letters in a composer's full name (forename and surname as listed in the catalogue), there will be 14 digits grouped into fives. Each number (0 to 9) can represent different letters; there is, of course, a recognised system by which letters are assigned to numbers.
Then, on each day of the week, a title of a piece of choral music written by the week’s named composer in either English or Latin will be given, but the title will have had the vowels removed and the spacing between words edited. For example, the title could be presented as MS RRNS TR
, and the answer would be MISERERE NOSTRI
. The music may, or may not, appear in the imprimis catalogue.
Each day’s answer - whether a composer’s name or the title of a piece of choral music - can be submitted from the day on which it is published until Christmas Day, and multiple submissions can be made, although only the last one will be scored. A correct answer will earn a point. The player with the highest score (out of a possible 22) on Christmas Day will be the overall winner; if there is a tie, the overall winner will be selected at random.
The overall winner’s name will be published within the octave of Christmas, and the answers will be published on Christmas Day..
